Text Types We Teach
Our writing course focuses heavily on persuasive and narrative texts as they are the two most widely-tested text types in primary and high school. We teach children how to transfer the structural and language features of persuasive and narrative texts to compose other less-tested texts such as description, recounts, letters, newspaper articles, diary entries, emails, information reports and advice sheets.

Course Structure
Step 1: Assessment
Prior to joining a class, all new students must complete two mandatory writing assessments. This enables Clever Fox Education to identify each child’s specific strengths and weaknesses in persuasive essay and narrative writing.
Writing is assessed using the NAPLAN marking rubric and comes with an overall score, a score breakdown, text annotations and two pages of detailed written feedback.
Step 2: Detailed and structured lessons with modelled examples
We explicitly teach
1. Text-type structure (imaginative, informative and persuasive texts)
2. How to plan, write and edit texts in the time allowed (20-30 minutes for scholarship/selective high school, 40 minutes for NAPLAN and 30 minutes for ICAS)
3. How to structure paragraphs using the TEEL/PEEL/PETAL method
4. How to elaborate on points and to back each point up with evidence and examples
5. How to include high-scoring vocabulary from the NAPLAN Markers Guide
6. How to effectively use an array of persuasive devices, literary techniques, adjectives, adverbs, as well as accurate punctuation, grammar and spelling
Modelled examples
In every lesson, we provide students with a modelled plan, a modelled exemplary text, recommended high-scoring vocabulary words from the NAPLAN Markers Guide as well as a comprehensive list of figurative language. All of the above allows students to see what high-scoring texts look like.
Step 3: Weekly Competitions
Every week, Amber Fox chooses a ‘Student of the Week’ from her array of classes. The winning student’s exemplary work is emailed to all clients so students can learn from, and be inspired, by one another.
Step 4: Homework
Homework is to complete the persuasive essay started in class.
Step 5: Weekly assessment and feedback
Homework is marked using the NAPLAN marking rubric for persuasive and narrative texts, and a similar rubric for other text types, and comes with an overall score, a score breakdown, text annotations and 2 pages of detailed written feedback.

It’s an absolute pleasure to write this review for Amber and her writing course because it’s truly well deserved! This is, without doubt, the best and most comprehensive children’s writing course you could wish to sign up for. The programme is superbly structured and professionally put together with a lot of thought and care so that children won’t be overwhelmed at the beginning and can progress at their own pace.
